The Tikina representative of Matuku in the Lau Group, Mr Varanisese Gade, said cruise liners that visited the island have provided a source of income for islanders.

“We perform traditional ceremonies of welcome and entertainment when they visit our shores and they buy artifacts and handicrafts as souvenirs,” Mr Gade said.

“This usually takes place at the chiefly village of Yaroi and they sometimes tour nearby villages.”

He said although there hasn’t been a visit by any liner lately, developments carried out by Government on the island would boost the tourism industry.

“The Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama revealed that the Matuku airstrip will be upgraded soon,” Mr Gade said.

“Government’s initiative to develop infrastructure in Matuku will really boost tourism in Lau.”

Another potential area earmarked as a major tourist attraction on the island is the surfing, which Tourism Fiji is promoting at the moment.
