More than 55 teachers will gather at the Centre for Appropriate Training and Development in Nadave to take part in the two-day Training of Trainers for Teachers in Drugs, Substance Abuse and HIV AIDS.
The workshop is organised by the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council (NSAAC) of the Ministry of Education and it will be facilitated by officers from NSAAC, Police Drug Unit, FNU (College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences) and Fiji Network of People Living with HIV-FJN+.
A total of 45 secondary school teachers, 12 primary school teachers and one special school teacher from the Suva/Nausori/Tailevu Districts have been invited to attend the training, which starts tomorrow.
The main objective of this training is to prepare teachers to implement drugs, substance abuse, HIV and AIDS and elimination of child abuse programmes in schools and communities in order to:
· Promote non-use of drugs
· Delay the onset of drug use
· Stop harmful use
· Increase awareness of the results of drug use
· Increase decision-making ability for healthier lifestyle choices
After completing this training, stakeholders expect schools represented to actively fight against drugs and substance abuse and other related issues such as HIV AIDS and child abuse in order to qualify as “A Drug Free School”.
The workshop will be opened by the Divisional Education Officer Central, Mr Matavuso Kotobalavu and closed by NSAAC member Dr Nemani Seru on Wednesday.
Funding for this training has been provided by NSAAC (MOE) and FNU’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
