Typhoid campaign on track

Operation Savaliga has been well received by the people of the upper reaches of Navosa as the Ministry of Health's typhoid campaign continues into its third week.

As of today (June 9th) a total 4191 people had been vaccinated. That, says Ministry spokesperson Iliesa Tora, is a big number considering the targeted population is around 5500 people.

Fifteen villages and 12 settlements have been visited by public health teams involved in the campaign. Everybody above two years old has been vaccinated.

The Ministry of Health notes the goodwill of the people of Navosa and their interest to be vaccinated as a preventative measure against typhoid.

Health staff and community health workers have been conducting typhoid awareness. The awareness at various Navosa villages includes hand washing demonstration, proper disposal of human waste, boiling of drinking water, elimination of fly breeding places, plus proper washing, cooking and food covering.

Mr Tora said they expect the vaccination programme to be completed by Thursday 10th June.

Followup meetings and inspections will continue over the next month to ensure people continue to follow proper hygiene practices.

Close to 190 people were diagnosed with typhoid symptoms and have been treated.
