The Unites States of America recognises the importance of Fiji, and has invested in the country and will continue working with the Fijian Government on a range of programmes.
The message from the White House was conveyed to Foreign Affairs Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola by Mr Christopher Marut the director of the office of Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island Affairs in the Department of State’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP).
He was accompanied by US Ambassador Steven McGann, who paid a courtesy call to the minister at the Foreign Affairs office at the Vale Ni Bose complex in Suva.
Mr Marut said the US was willing to assist Fiji and had made an offer to do so.
“We’re very interested in Fiji and are keen to continue working on issues that are important to both our countries,” Mr Marut said.
Ratu Inoke shared how Fiji was appreciative of the assistance rendered by the USA and how Ambassador Steven McGann had been a true friend of Fiji.
“The ambassador visits us regularly to share his views and offers advice to us,” Ratu Inoke said.
It was Mr Marut’s first visit to Fiji and he was grateful for the opportunity to meet the minister.
“I appreciate the opportunity to meet with your minister to register a few thoughts and get a sense of the country,” Mr Marut said.
Discussions were centered around Fiji’s socio-economic and political situation and challenges that Fiji was facing in implementing its reform agenda.
