The Country Director for the United States of America, Peace Corps, Dr Ruth Larimer today thanked the host families and local community for their role in teaching the trainee volunteers of the different cultures present in Fiji. This experience will give volunteers a bigger world view which they will take back to the US.

Dr Larimer was speaking at the swearing in ceremony of a new team of volunteers, who will be assigned for 2 years to different fields of interest around the country.

“Some of them belong to the integrated Environmental Resource Management projects and they have expertise in environmental issues relating to marine life, forestry, or other sciences.

“Others have expertise in community health promotion and they go out to help spread the word about preventing communicable diseases, living healthy lifestyles, and keeping a clean and safe living area. Some will focus on empowering youth or children or women in particular,” she said.

Dr Larimer said the US Peace Corps considers the integration of volunteers into the community and sharing of cultures as quite as important as the technical training that the communities request.

She adds that by understanding of each others cultures we make a contribution to world peace and understandings.
