The Coalition Government's vision to position Fiji as a thriving international gateway, not just for tourists but also for investors and businesspeople was again mooted in parliament this week.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Honorable Manoa Kamikamica highlighted this during the motion to review of Fiji Airport's 2021 annual reports, whereby emphasised Fiji's strategic location as an entry and transit hub for travelers from the Pacific Islands, Australia, New Zealand, and the US.
Minister Kamikamica underscored the importance of partnerships with Fiji Airways, which handles 60-70% of the country's visitors, and advocated for more international flights to enhance Fiji's connectivity.
Minister Kamikamica called for continuous investment in airport infrastructure, both in visible areas like terminals and in behind-the-scenes operations.
In alignment with recommendations, Minister Kamikamica supported using Nausori Airport for more international flights to maximize its return on investment and also mentioned a $10 million allocation to upgrade airports in Labasa, Savusavu, Matei, Rotuma, and Lakeba, signaling continued development across Fiji's aviation infrastructure.
The Minister advised Fiji Airports to maintain financial discipline, reinvesting in core functions and infrastructure, while assuring the government’s support in these effort
