As of 15 November, 2012, the Ministry of Justice will accept the Voter Identification Cards (VICs) issued through the Electronic Voter Registration as a valid form of identification (ID) to access all services available through the Ministry.
“The Financial Intelligence Unit and the Judiciary have led the way in incorporating Voter Identification Cards as a legitimate form of ID,” the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said. “By continuing to increase the functionality of the card as legitimate ID within Fiji, this will be a significant convenience to all those Fijians who have registered.”
Any Fijian who has registered to vote and who possesses a VIC will be able to access services provided by the Registrar of Titles Office, the Births, Deaths & Marriages Registry, the Companies Office (which includes the Moneylenders Registry), and the Official Receiver’s Office.
The Ministry is satisfied that the VIC is a credible and reliable form of identification. Before its issuance, Fijians are required to provide detailed background information as well as a separate form of identification. The VIC is further secured by biometric information, such as the thumbprint, which is unique to the individual.
“We continue to encourage other Government Ministries to accept the Voter Card as valid ID,” said the Attorney-General. “This will greatly improve the delivery of Government services to those Fijians for whom this is their first or only form of ID.”
“The end of Fiji’s intensive period of EVR is less than two weeks away,” the Attorney-General said. “We urge all Fijians who have not yet registered to take advantage of the many conveniently-located registration centers now open, before EVR contracts to a limited number of permanent registration centers after the end of August.”
Voter Registration Centers, where VICs are issued, will be open across the country until the 31st of August.
