For the people of Volivoli, a farming community outside Rakiraki Town along the King’s Road, work on their water project is a realisation of Government’s commitment in improving access to drinking water in rural areas that are without a tapped water supply.

Minister for Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment Colonel Samuela Saumatua visited the project recently.

Provincial administrator Ra Jioji Satakala said the project, that is valued at $90,000, would be completed soon.

“Their water source is from a borehole and the project is awaiting the Fiji Electricity Authority’s connection to the borehole infrastructure,” Mr Satakala said.

“People of Volivoli have been without fresh water for some time.

“The project will be in two phases, the first is for 20 families and the second phase is for 30 families.”

The water project is funded by the Climate Change Unit which an office within the Department of Environment.

Mr Satakala is optimistic the project will be completed and ready for use by the end of this month.

The office of the provincial administrator Ra is also looking at other water projects in the areas where the supply of clean water is a challenge.
