12/02/2012

The National Disaster management Office (NDMO) has confirmed that water levels in Tavua, Rakiraki and at the Nadi River has started receding.

NDMO officials on the ground at the Western division said that rainfall has stopped at some major centres but drizzling conditions are experienced in other parts.

For Rakiraki, Lautoka and Sigatoka,  rain has stopped and water levels have started receeding while in Nadi, Ba and Tavua light rain has been experienced.

The office has also confirmed that water levels at the Nadi River have gone lower than the critical level.

The critical level for the river is 4.5 metres and at one stage reached 4.54m but has since receded.

Despite this development, the disaster office is calling on those in the western division to remain on  alert.

“We still urge the public to take extra precautionary measures during this time,” District Officer Nadi Peni Koro said.

The Galoa River in Lautoka has burst its bank due to continuous rain and a team is at the site to assess the damage.
