“WE TURN POLICY INTO ACTION” DPM GAVOKA TO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM ACCELERATOR GRADUATES

09/06/2025

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, reminded graduates of the Sustainable Tourism Accelerator of the importance of their leadership towards sustainability, inclusivity and resilience, which are core values of national tourism goals, during their graduation ceremony today (9.06.25).

Organised by the members of the Duavata Collective and partners from Tourism Fiji and the Good Business Foundation, the Sustainable Tourism Accelerator exemplifies how policy is turned into action.

“It advances multiple priorities in the framework, from nurturing sustainable investments to empowering communities and supporting cultural, community-led experiences,” he said.

DPM Gavoka stressed the strategic goals of such a programme, which is far more than just the support of small businesses.

“The programme does more than support small businesses. It strengthens tourism's contribution to inclusive development and resilience.”

“I urge stronger support from government to scale initiatives that drive inclusive growth, create jobs, and help us reach our national development and sustainability goals. Investing in these programmes is investing in the future of Fiji’s most valuable economic sectors.”

92% of participants successfully graduated, and 91% of ventures are now running and supporting livelihoods.

This Accelerator didn’t do all this alone. It happened because of collaboration with government, civil society, and the private sector all working together.”

DPM Gavoka encouraged graduates that the journey is not over, yet it has just begun towards a new model of tourism.

“As you graduate, remember this isn’t the end; it’s a step forward toward a new kind of tourism. You are the future of this industry; you are its storytellers, its innovators, and its guardians. You represent a tourism model that is proud, ethical, and rooted in vanua.”
