09/12/2024

In a remarkable show of solidarity and community spirit, the women of Moala Island united for their inaugural march commemorating the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. Women from the villages of Maloku, Vadra, Keteira, Nuku, and Vunuku joined forces to advocate for gender equality, children’s safety, and a society free from violence.

The march, held along the main village pathway, was a vibrant demonstration of determination and hope. Women wore

in colorful attire carried banners with uplifting messages, chanting and singing as they walked. The event brought together women of all ages, fostering an atmosphere of empowerment.

Joy Salauneune, of Nuku village, expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection for supporting the initiative.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this significant event and for the Ministry’s commitment to fostering positive change in our communities."

She also highlighted the significance of the occasion, sharing that this is the first time such programs have been brought to the islands.

"Having these programs reach our communities is a monumental step in addressing gender-based violence and creating awareness at the grassroots level," Salauneune added.

Officiating at the event, Ratu Nacanieli Draunidalo, a respected community leader, officiated the event, emphasizing the shared responsibility to protect vulnerable groups, particularly children.

"This campaign is not just a call to action for women—it is a call for all of us. As a community, we must stand firm against all forms of violence and nurture an environment where every child can thrive safely and every woman can live without fear."

"What we witness here today is history in the making. Your courage to take this stand against violence sends a strong message across our island and beyond. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of women in our communities."

Ratu Draunidalo also called for greater male involvement in combating gender-based violence:
"It is crucial for men to stand shoulder to shoulder with women in this fight. Change will only happen when we, as men, recognize our role in supporting gender equality and creating a safer society."

Addressing the younger generation, he encouraged them to be advocates for change:
"To our youth, you are the future of Moala. Use your voices, your talents, break cycles of violence and build a culture of respect, dignity, and love in our villages."

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual global initiative observed from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). It highlights the urgent need to address gender inequalities and prevent violence in all its forms.

The women of Moala’s inaugural march marks a turning point in their fight against societal norms that perpetuate violence and inequality. By stepping into leadership roles and raising awareness, they aim to inspire lasting change not only on Moala Island but across the Lau Group and beyond.

The day featured a range of impactful activities:

Awareness Sessions: Discussions on the impact of gender-based violence and strategies to combat it.

Children’s Programs: Interactive activities teaching respect, safety, and kindness.

Cultural Performances: Traditional dances and songs celebrating resilience and unity.

This groundbreaking event has set a precedent for continued efforts to empower women, protect children, and build a violence-free society for all.
