WORKSHOP TO STRENGTHEN CYBER CRIME LAWS

24/07/2012

The Ministry of Defence in partnership with various Government officials and
stakeholders converged this morning to formalise and strengthen cybercrime
laws for Fiji.

The workshop aims to formalise laws, strengthen the existing ones and also
present policies to improve the technology framework in the country.

The Institute of Cyber Crime Law director Marco Gerke said that "Fiji needs
to strengthen its laws that can convict cyber crime offenders as one
computer hacker can have access to 10,000 networks in one day".

"Fiji needs to train personals to better understand how well and efficient
they can prosecute this people", Mr Gerke said.

Head of Fiji's Cyber Crime Investigation Unit Inspector Serupepeli Neiko
said that, "the trend is increasing which is worrying for the force".

"We receive three to four reports of hoax messages via mobile phones, bank
accounts frauds and unauthorised transactions in a week. To date, the number
has increased to 75% received for the first six months."

The Fiji Police Force is adamant that through this workshop, current laws
will be strengthened and new legislations formalised to combat cyber crime.
