WORLD CITIES DAY 2021

30/10/2021

The Ministry of Local Government in partnership with UN-Habitat and Suva City Council is celebrating this year’s Global Observance of World Cities Day (WCD), at Albert Park on Sunday, 31 October from 10.00am to 2.00pm. The United Nations General Assembly has designated this day to create awareness and action for sustainable urbanisation.

WCD is expected to promote the international and national community’s interest in global urbanisation, push forward cooperation among countries to create opportunities and address challenges of urbanisation, and contribute to sustainable urban development around the world.

The general theme of World Cities Day is Better City, Better Life, while each year a different sub-theme is selected, to bring to the forefront successes of urbanisation and identify specific challenges resulting from urbanisation.

The theme for World Cities Day 2021 is “Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience”. This strongly advocates the impact that climate change has on our city and town residents, the frequent number of floods, rising sea levels, tropical cyclones and the extreme temperatures that is now affecting our nation.

The  event will be officiated by the Minister of Local Government, Premila Kumar.

This Day will bring together relevant development partners of the Ministry of Local Government, Municipal Councils, Government Ministries and UN WOMEN to showcase their respective information booths.

There will also be a ROC Market at Cakobau Road, where several talented vendors will sell various products, including food.
