The Western Division will pursue sources of water to supplement supply in a bid to ensure those living in rural areas are no longer affected.
Water is always a major problem in the Western Division during the dry season and Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki says a proactive approach is being taken so people do not suffer during the dry season.
And to kick start things, a team from the Ministry of Mineral Resources (MRD) has started work in the division.
“A team is in Yasawa starting from Yasawa-i-rara and looking at sourcing water from underground,”Mr Cawaki said.
“We have seen in the past that a lot of water sheds are drying up but underground water will be used as a supplement.”
He added that his office was working together with other ministries and departments like MRD, Local Government, and the district and provincial offices.
“We are working with stakeholders to be able to see other water sources from underground so that it is sustainable and we can sustain the community during the dry season,” Mr Cawaki said.
His office has completed an assessment in Yasawa-i-rara and is in Nacula and Yaqeta.
“The plan is for that team to come down to Naviti, Viwa the Malolo group of islands, Mamanuca group and Vatulele,” Mr Cawaki said.
“So this year, we are going for sustainable water from underground to supplement rain water.”
