The Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni reiterated Government’s stand on assisting the people of Fiji and moving the country forward while meeting with the Soqosoqo Vakamarama in Saunaka village on Friday.
“Following the President’s request to visit the villages and its people around the country, I am here also to meet with you face to face,” she said.
Dr Luveni stressed the importance of the role that women played and encouraged the women of Saunaka village to be good leaders whether it be in the home or within the Soqosoqo Vakamarama organisation.
“Pillar 3 of the People’s Charter for Change, Peace and Progress which is ensuring effective, enlightened and accountable leadership highlights the importance of enhancing, supporting and ensuring the participation of women leaders at all levels of decision making,” she said.
Highlighting the need for women to speak up in areas of development matters, the Minister said that women sometimes are more knowledgeable in development needs and thus are important in the process of moving forward.
“You need to look at ways and avenues to generate income for your families sustenance and in doing so utilise your skills and talents having a sense of direction,” she said.
The Minister also had discussions on health issues such as HIV, issues affecting the youth of today and the importance of eating well balanced meals.
In return, the villagers and the women of the Saunaka Soqosoqo Vakamarama thanked the Minister for taking the time to visit them and listen to their grievances.
