A woman, regardless of whether she has any form of formal education should be self-reliant, says the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni.
In particular she is pledging to women in the rural and remote areas to become conscious of their skills and abilities that they can capitalize on to generate income for themselves and their families.
Dr Luveni said in line with the Millennium Development Goal, “Promote Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women,” the Ministry is advocating for women to be self-reliant, independent, resourceful and responsible.
“I encourage women to become self reliant which means they must have the means and information of generating income for themselves and they should already have the skills to produce products that they can sell to make money so that they become financial independence and confidence to face whatever difficulties they may face in life. A woman is the source of strength not only for her family but the society as well. Her role in national socio-economic development should always be recognized and acknowledged.
Dr Luveni is calling upon women to realize the importance of being self-reliant and work towards shaping their lives into one with confidence and knowing that she will be able to make an informed and wise decision.
“Women in the village maybe under paid or have no form of formal employment must be able to identify the talents that they have which they can build upon to be able to generate income for themselves and most importantly be independent and self-reliant. This will be the key to graduating out of poverty and planning for a brighter future,” Dr Luveni said.
