A review of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will take place in New York from the 20th – 22nd September where countries will come together to discuss on how to accelerate the eight MDGs in order to meet the 2015 deadline.
Fiji is also participating in the Summit with presentations put together with the assistance of Fiji TV and UN. In launching the Pacific Island News Association(PINA) “Stand Up take Action 2010 Campaign yesterday, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said Government has implemented policy initiatives that meets the MDGs.
The AG said the Strategic Framework for Change was launched by the Prime Minister on 1st of July last year and the SFFC office put together a more detailed economic development plan.
“It has its specific focus on improving the socio-economic condition of the people of Fiji, in particular from now until 2012 where the idea is to bring about an enabling environment not just in terms of specific targets but also in terms of providing the legislative framework, the fiscal framework to be able to achieve those goals,” he said.
The AG highlighted initiatives such as the Ministry of Agriculture emphasizing on food production to empower our own food supply. He said the collaboration between PINA and United Nations is appreciated and the media also needs to be pro-Fiji.
“The Bainimarama Government is very much committed to the MDGs and to achieving those through various ministries and ministers. In order to achieve the goals to be able to eradicate the huge disparity between people within our own society and of course globally too we need collaboration.”
