Workshop effort commended

24/02/2011

The Ministry of Education welcomes the effort of the newly established Fiji National Qualification Framework (FNQF) to train professional individuals from government ministries, industries, professional groups and training providers at a 2 day workshop.

An issue of particular interest is the exposition of the elements of competence based assessment as one component of the programme that will be discussed in the workshop.

The emphasis of the competence based assessment is aligned to the policy of continuous assessment that will take place in schools due to the removal of external examinations from the education system.

The school-based assessments are implemented for learning that tests skills, knowledge and attitudes on a regular basis; the focus being on child-centered learning.

The ministry has been developing, trialing and implementing assessment approaches for Fiji that is aligned to global trends.

Furthermore this new development ensures the continuity and consistency of competence assessment from primary education up to secondary education and finally to the tertiary level.

The interesting part of the competence based assessment is that everyone in the school system will be assessed because each individual are supposedly competent. This is something examinations cannot address.
