World Telecommunications Development Conference 2010

The 5th WTDC is currently underway in Hyderabad, India from 24 May to 4 June 2010.  

This is a 4 year event organized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to consolidate the universal effort in advancing telecommunications and connecting the unconnected throughout the world.  

The Government of Fiji has been a member of the ITU since May 1971.  

The Attorney General and Minister for Communications who is representing Government at this conference said that it was most unfortunate that Fiji hitherto despite its long membership of ITU for it pays an annual membership fee has not taken full advantage of its membership of the ITU.  

The Minister said that one of Fiji’s aims now would be to get more involved as a country and as a Government for the development and modernizing of the rapidly changing telecommunications sector and strengthen Fiji’s presence at the global level.  He said we must as the hub and now with the liberalisation take a leading role at the global level for representation of the Southern Pacific.

The Minister, who is accompanied by the Chairperson of the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji Ms Mere Vuniwaqa, will be making a country presentation for Fiji at the Ministerial Roundtable on Tuesday, 25 May 2010.  

The conference has over one thousand delegates from a 142 countries.

Contemporary and important topics like spectrum management, digital broadcasting, broadband, e-Health, trends in telecommunications policy and regulatory reform, e-Education and the capacity-building opportunities providing by the ITU Academy will also be discussed during this 2 week meeting.
