YOUNG CLIMATE ADVOCATE CALLS ON WORLD LEADERS TO ACT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

22/09/2019

Fourteen year-old Timoci Naulusala of Naivicula in Tailevu has yet again made Fiji proud after delivering an eloquent speech about the devastating impacts of climate change in our country and the Pacific.

The young lad co-chaired the Inter-Generational Town Hall session at the UN Youth Climate Summit in New York this afternoon alongside Marshall Islands President, Her Excellency Hilda Heine and a few other world leaders.

Timoci, a climate warrior, said world leaders must act now in order to save the future generation.

“Climate Change threat is real and it’s time we speak up against it. We must work as a team before it’s too late. Now is the time to act,” he said.

Timoci also took the opportunity to share his experience following the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.

“I witnessed the destruction caused by TC Winston to my school and village and some of us are still reeling from this experience. We still feel the impact and that’s why I am calling on world leaders to commit to climate action to protect our homes, and those of all Pacific Island children,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General and Minister responsible for Climate Change, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Timoci’s participation at the Summit would certainly add our voices to the campaign of raising ambition for climate action for the sake of all the people today and the future generation.

Timoci, along with some selected Pacific youths, who are part of the Summit, will also meet the Minister for Defence, National Security and Foreign Affairs Hon. Inia Seruiratu tomorrow. The Minister is also a climate champion.

They are expected to discuss how to strengthen the Pacific youth network when advocating for climate action.
