The 2025 National Agriculture Show, which concluded last Friday in Nadi, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering farmers and strengthening Fiji’s agricultural sector as a driver of sustainable development.

Among the highlights of the week-long event was the recognition of 28-year-old crop farmer, Mohammad Afzal Iqbal of Valelawa, Dreketi, who was awarded Young Farmer of the Year.

Mr. Iqbal dedicated the award to the memory of his late father, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in his farming journey. From working briefly in the hospitality sector, Mr. Iqbal eventually returned to farming full-time, cultivating a wide variety of crops including watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, maize, cabbage, and dhania.

He credited his success to the strong support provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways and the Government through ploughing services, subsidized inputs, and advisory assistance.

“Agriculture officers have always been there for us. They helped with ploughing, provided subsidised fertilisers and chemicals, and most importantly, gave us the knowledge to expand our farms,” he said.

He further commended the Government for prioritising agriculture as a national development sector, noting that initiatives such as advisory support and subsidised services have significantly improved the livelihoods of farmers.

“If agriculture assistance was not available, we would not be able to reach this level. I would like to sincerely thank the Ministry of Agriculture, especially the officers in my locality, for enabling me to achieve this award,” he said.

The young farmer also encouraged other youths to take up agriculture, highlighting the role of modern technology and advisory services in helping him grow his farm.

“Be connected with your agriculture department and locality officers because they will guide you in the right way. Use modern technologies wisely—Google, YouTube, and online resources, they have helped me a lot in learning and applying new methods to grow my farm,” he added.

The conclusion of the 2025 National Agriculture Show once again underscored the Government’s commitment to supporting farmers, boosting food security, and inspiring the next generation to view agriculture as a viable and rewarding career.
