Chinese New Year celebrations continued at the Naviti Resort with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama showering gifts to children on behalf of the management of the Warwick Fiji Resorts & Spa today.
The Year of the Golden Rabbit comes every 12 years.
For the first time in six decades millions across the globe celebrated the Year of the Golden Rabbit on Thursday with dragon dances and firecrackers.
Naviti Resort general manager Pauline Chua said: “This year the combination of metal as an earthly sign and the rabbit as a heavenly sign resulted in the year of the Golden Rabbit.”
“One of 12 animals that make up the traditional Chinese zodiac, the rabbit, is associated with compassion, sensitivity and flexibility,” she said.
Ms Chua said the New Year would bring stability and change.
The Year of the Golden Rabbit is the most important festival of the whole year in Chinese culture and it involves dinner.
As part of the celebration, pocket money is always given to children in red envelopes or packs.
Ms Chua handed red envelopes to Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama, who was chief guest at celebrations at the resort, to give to children present at Naviti.
Tourists and locals at the resort were entertained by a local Chinese Youth and Social Entertainment Group and the Fiji Police brass band.
Naviti Resort director, Colonel Paul Manueli said the year was also for negotiations and dialogue.
The PM and businessmen to a dinner by the resort on Wednesday night.
In reciprocating, Commodore Bainimarama wished good omen for everyone in the new year.
