Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Ioane Naivalarua speaking to the participants of the National Youth Summit.
“The National Youth Summit and its objectives support the ideals of the Roadmap for Democracy, and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development such as the strengthening of relevant governance systems, structures and institutions. The provision of leadership training and development for all including women and youths to ensure effective, enlightened and accountable leadership,” he said.
“Our government is eager to consider and involve you, the youths, in planning so that when it is your turn to lead, you would have adequate knowledge and experience to effectively guide Fiji into the future.”
He commended the youths for electing an interim national youth council, which he says present a largely untapped potential for economic and social growth in the country.
“And as you may well know that youths face increased challenges in reaching that potential. The youth segment remains the most vulnerable to crime and deviance, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS, drugs, substance abuse and unemployment.”
He said youth leaders must work with decision makers in finding amicable solutions to their challenges.
