DEPUTY PM HON. VILIAME GAVOKA'S SPEECH AT THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO SERIES
15/11/2024
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, respected colleagues, and dear friends, Bula vinaka!
First and foremost, I acknowledge the traditional owners of these lands which we now stand. Na Vanua o Nadi, Were Levu i Navatulevu, na kea Viyagwane na Jui Nadi. Their leaders – past, present and emerging.
It is a pleasure to be here tonight for this significant event, the launch of the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
The new Landcruiser or Toyota Prado as it is more commonly known - traces its noble lineage back to the Landcruiser BJ20 series which was produced from the 1950’s to the 1970’s when the HJ45 came in the 3.6-litre inline 6-cylinder diesel engine.
In 1984, the Landcruiser 70’s series arrived at a time when 4-wheel drive vehicles were becoming increasingly popular as commercial vehicles and for transporting passengers around the world.
For Fiji, our mountain ranges and sometimes rough terrain, makes the Toyota Landcruiser a vehicle of choice for many government departments: whether as an ambulance transporting a mother & child to the hospital, whether as a police vehicle patrolling the borders of Keyasi or as a technical support vehicle for electrical engineers working at our dam.
The Toyota Landcruiser has forged its place in our history and as we celebrate the technological advancements embodied in the Land Cruiser Prado – which the Asco Motors CEO has already mentioned in detail, it is crucial to reflect on the significance of sustainability.
As I speak here tonight, we have a team representing us at the COP 29 in Azerbaijan who are focusing on escalating impacts of climate change and the effects this has on sustainable development and security.
In an era where environmental consciousness is paramount, Toyota Motors Corporation and Asco Motors have commendably integrated eco-friendly practices into their operations and product offerings including the introduction of hybrid technology in vehicles, including this very new Landcruiser Prado, which exemplifies a vital commitment to reducing our carbon foot-print while still delivering the power and performance that motor vehicle drivers expect from a Landcruiser.
The launch of the Land Cruiser Prado also serves as a testament to the positive influence of the automotive industry on our economy. Asco Motors has played a pivotal role in enhancing local employment opportunities, contributing to our nation building and fostering pathways for local entrepreneurship.
In Fiji, automotive sales generate jobs not only at dealerships but also throughout the entire supply chain; car wash, shipping, road transport authority and others.
As a Deputy Prime Minister, I urge Asco Motors and all industry stakeholders to continue collaborating with the government on initiatives aimed at enhancing mobility and infrastructure across our nation.
Strengthening our public transport systems, investing in road safety, and promoting sustainable transport solutions are essential components of our nation’s growth.
Collaborations between the public and private sectors can drive innovation while addressing community needs.
For instance, we can explore initiatives related to electric vehicles, develop charging infrastructure, and promote environmentally friendly public transport solutions. Together, we can pave the way for a future where accessibility and sustainability coexist harmoniously.
Furthermore, I encourage Asco Motors to actively engage with our communities as they expand their presence in Fiji. Whether through educational programs in schools, partnerships with local artisans, or support for environmental initiatives, giving back to the community enriches not only the lives of those directly involved but also strengthens the fabric of our nation.
It is vital that we invest in our youth, nurturing the talents and abilities of our future leaders. By focusing on education and training, particularly in vocational fields related to the automotive industry, we can elevate skill sets, empower individuals, and create a talent pipeline for future success.
Today is not merely a celebration of a vehicle; it is a celebration of our identity as Fijians. Our love for adventure, our passion for the outdoors, and our relentless pursuit of excellence are embodied in the Land Cruiser Prado.
This vehicle fosters deeper connections with our stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. It invites us all to embark on journeys filled with discovery whether exploring our pristine beaches, traversing our lush mountains, or navigating our vibrant cities.
With the Prado, let us seize every drive as an opportunity to strengthen our relationships and build a legacy for generations to come.
As I draw my remarks to a close, let us remember that the launch of the Land Cruiser Prado signifies more than just a moment in time; it represents a promise of what lies ahead. We stand at the forefront of innovation and sustainability, and our journey together is just beginning.
To Asco Motors Fiji, thank you for the introduction of this model to the Fiji market. To all the stakeholders present here today—your contributions are invaluable in shaping a brighter future for our country. To my fellow Fijians, let us embrace the spirit of adventure that defines us. Let us commit ourselves to exploring new horizons and charting a course for a prosperous future.
Thank you very much and may your journeys in the new Land Cruiser Prado be filled with joy, exploration, and unforgettable experiences.
Now, I will officially welcome and launch the new Landcruiser Prado!
Vinaka vakalevu, and enjoy the rest of this wonderful launch event!
