Good morning and a big Vinaka vakalevu to you all!

  1. It is with immense pleasure and great honour that I stand before you today to celebrate a truly momentous occasion—the Platinum Jubilee of Swami Vivekananda College. I also take this opportunity to thank the
School Management for inviting me to be part of this great occasion.  This milestone represents 75 years of remarkable contributions to education, youth empowerment, and nation-building. It is a time to reflect on the rich history of this esteemed institution, recognize the achievements of its community, and look forward to its future.

  1. Ladies and gentlemen, Swami Vivekananda College, formerly Shri Vivekananda High School, was established in 1949 through the efforts of visionaries like Swami Rudrananda, the late Mr. A. D. Patel, Sadhu Kuppuswami, and the stalwarts of the Sangam. Swami Rudrananda and Mr. A.D. Patel, both founders of the National Federation Party (NFP), were inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and were dedicated to creating an institution that would serve as a pillar of educational excellence in Fiji. Their foresight and commitment laid the foundation for what has become a beacon of learning and character development.

  1. The school officially opened its doors on March 9, 1949, with just 19 students in a single classroom. This modest beginning, coinciding with the birthday of Shri Ramakrishna, marked the inception of a journey that has seen extraordinary growth and transformation. I am told that today, Swami Vivekananda College has expanded to 27 classrooms and 1,039 students. Ladies and gentlemen this is not an ordinary achievement.

  1. As we celebrate this Platinum Jubilee, it is essential to acknowledge the guiding principles that have shaped the college’s journey. The vision of spirituality and character building has been central to the institution’s mission. Swami Vivekananda College has strived to foster an environment where students are not only equipped with academic knowledge but also imbued with values that contribute to their holistic development – an important pillar of nation building.

  1. Ladies and gentlemen, youth empowerment is a core focus of Swami Vivekananda College, which has a long-standing tradition of fostering holistic education. The school’s emphasis on both academic and extracurricular excellence creates a nurturing environment that enables students to develop a wide range of skills. By encouraging participation in sports, arts, and various cultural activities, the college ensures that students receive a well-rounded education, preparing them to become confident and capable leaders.

  1. Extracurricular activities at Swami Vivekananda College have consistently earned national recognition, with students excelling in sports, oratory, debate, and creative arts. These achievements are a testament to the college’s commitment to empowering its students, providing them with opportunities to explore their talents and express themselves beyond the classroom.

  1. The holistic approach to education at Swami Vivekananda College aligns with the broader goals of youth empowerment, emphasizing the development of character, leadership, and social responsibility. By nurturing these qualities, the school plays a pivotal role in shaping the future leaders of Fiji, ensuring that they are not only academically proficient but also socially aware and ready to contribute positively to society.

  1. In recent years, Swami Vivekananda College has embraced innovation and technology to enhance the educational experience. The introduction of digital learning in 2010, the adoption of Moodle in 2020, and the provision of “Surface Go” devices for teachers reflect the college’s commitment to staying at the forefront of educational advancements. The opening of the Meditation Centre in 2019 and the establishment of a fully equipped gym in 2022 is crucial for promoting mental and physical well-being of students and teachers.

  1. Ladies and gentlemen, the Coalition Government recognizes the critical role that education plays in shaping the future of our nation. As part of its commitment to educational development, we have made significant investments in improving the quality and accessibility of education across the country. As soon as we came in Government, we provided “$200 Back to School Support” totalling $44.7 million to over 223,000 students in 2023. We continued with the back-to-school support this year and paid around $42.5 million to over 212,000 students. In the
2024-2025 National Budget which was passed by Parliament last month,
we have set aside $40 million for back-to-school support for the 2025 school year. Apart from this, in our first National Budget (announced in June 2023), we got rid of the student loan scheme, forgave over $600 million in TELS debt and introduced a new scholarship scheme.

  1. On behalf of the Coalition Government, I can assure you all that Government remains steadfast in its commitment to education, as reflected in the substantial budget allocation of $627.6 million for the Ministry of Education this year. A total of $408.3 million has been allocated for primary and secondary education, ensuring that students across the country have access to quality learning environments.

  1. To support students from financially challenged backgrounds, we have allocated $37.0 million for transport assistance in the Budget. On Tuesday this week, Cabinet has approved to fully subsidize the increased student bus fares that will be effective from 1 September.

  1. We have strengthened the Tertiary Scholarships Scheme with $150.5 million, opening doors for higher education and specialized training. The Graduate Business Start-Up Grant Scheme further empowers young entrepreneurs by providing them with the tools and financial support to start their own businesses, fostering a culture of innovation and growth.

  1. We will continue to support educational institutions like Swami
Vivekananda College reflects a broader vision to ensure that all students have access to high-quality education that prepares them for the challenges of the future. By investing in education, the Government aims to create an environment where students can thrive, acquire essential skills, and contribute positively to society.

  1. Ladies and gentlemen, we are very concerned about influx of hard drugs in the country. We have seen a rapid increase in drug cases in schools and amongst our youth. This must stop immediately, and we need everyone to be on board with us in our fight against drugs. We have set up a “Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau” under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration which is a critical step in law enforcement, intelligence gathering, and public awareness efforts. This bureau will play a central role in tackling drug-related issues and coordinating with various stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector entities, and civil society organizations.

  1. We have also approved a “National Counter Narcotics Strategy 20232028”, which focuses on reducing demand, supply, and harm associated with drugs. The strategy also includes legislative reforms, data collection, and the establishment of a dedicated drug addiction treatment centre.

  1. Beyond drugs, the Government is also addressing violence among youths through community programs and educational initiatives. These efforts are aimed at creating safer environments for young people and providing them with the support they need to thrive. By working closely
with communities, the Government is striving to curb violence and ensure that youth have access to positive role models and opportunities for personal growth

  1. As we commemorate this Platinum Jubilee, it is important to acknowledge the collective efforts of those who have contributed to the success of Swami Vivekananda College. The dedication of past and present management, Principals, staff, students, parents, donors, and well-wishers has been instrumental in shaping the institution’s legacy. Their unwavering support and commitment have played a crucial role in the college’s achievements and growth.

  1. To the students of Swami Vivekananda College, you are the future leaders and innovators of Fiji. Embrace the values of diligence, integrity, and creativity as you continue your educational journey. Your achievements today are the foundation for a brighter future for the nation.

  1. To the staff, your dedication and commitment to nurturing the minds of young learners are deeply appreciated. Your efforts are fundamental to the success of the institution and the development of its students.

  1. Standing at this critical juncture, it is essential to recognize the enduring impact of Swami Vivekananda College on the lives of its students and the wider community. The values and principles instilled here—of integrity, excellence, and service—continue to resonate far beyond these walls. The college’s legacy is not just in its academic and extracurricular achievements but also in the countless individuals who have been inspired and empowered by their experiences here.

  1. The challenge now is to build on this legacy with renewed vigour and enthusiasm so that students can excel, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress. The journey of Swami Vivekananda College is a testament to the power of vision and perseverance, and it sets a shining example of what can be accomplished through a steadfast commitment to education and holistic development.

Here’s to the past 75 years of exceptional achievements and to many more years of continued success and progress.
