MINISTER FOR YOUTH & SPORTS HON. JESE SAUKURU'S SPEECH AT THE HANDING OVER OF THE KAMIKAMICA PARK MULTIPURPOSE COURT
28/02/2025
The Turaga Tui Vidilo,
Distinguished Guests,
Representatives from the Fiji Sports Council,
Fiji National Sports Commission,
Commissioner Western’s Office,
Ba Provincial Office, and Lautoka City Council,
Youth Club Members,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Bula Vinaka and a warm greeting to you all.
Today is a significant day for the youth and sports sector in Fiji as we officially hand over the Kamikamica Park Multipurpose Court. This project is more than just a sporting facility; it is an investment in our young people, a symbol of our commitment to community development, and a stepping stone toward greater sporting excellence.
The construction of this court has been a long journey, beginning in the 2021–2022 financial year with site inspections and planning. While there were challenges along the way, I commend the collaboration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Public Works, and all our partners in ensuring the successful completion of this facility.
With a total investment of $171,439.39, this court is now ready to serve the people of Lautoka and beyond.
Ladies and gentlemen,
As the only government entity mandated to develop sports in Fiji, the Ministry of Youth and Sports firmly believes in the power of sports as a tool for nation-building, youth empowerment, and social cohesion. Sports are not just about competition; they are about discipline, teamwork, and fostering a spirit of excellence among our young people.
This multipurpose court is designed to cater to a range of indoor and outdoor sports, including volleyball, netball, basketball, and more. We hope that this facility will not only boost participation in sports but also produce future national representatives who will carry the Fijian flag with pride on the international stage.
Beyond sports, this facility serves as a safe space for community engagement, leadership development, and healthy living. Our youth face many challenges today, from unemployment to social pressures, and we believe that sports can be a positive force for change, keeping young people engaged in meaningful activities and away from negative influences.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of this facility, it will be under the supervision of the Lautoka City Council and the Fiji Sports Council. Their role will be crucial in maintaining and managing the court so that it remains accessible to all, particularly the youth of Kamikamica and surrounding areas.
Ladies and gentlemen,
This project is aligned with our National Sports and Physical Activity Policy, which focuses on providing accessible sporting infrastructure, encouraging participation in sports at all levels, and using sports as a tool for community development. It also reflects our broader national vision of youth empowerment through structured programs and opportunities for skills development.
To our young people—this facility belongs to you. Use it well. Train hard, play fair, and let this court be a stepping stone to your dreams. Whether you aspire to represent Fiji in sports, stay active for health reasons, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of playing with friends, this space is yours to grow and excel.
I would like to thank all our partners and stakeholders who have contributed to this project. Your dedication to youth and sports development is truly commendable.
As we officially open the Kamikamica Park Multipurpose Court today, let this be the beginning of many great achievements for our youth and our sporting community.
Vinaka vakalevu, Dhanyavaad, and Thank You.
