MINISTRY OF EDUCATION PLANS TO INTRODUCE CURRICULUM IN CIVIC AND MORAL EDUCATION

The Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts joins the nation in celebrating Fiji’s 51st Year of Independence with plans to introduce a curriculum in civic and moral education from next year.

To foster civic pride and moral values, the Ministry is developing a curriculum in civic and moral education. The curriculum intends to inculcate a sense of civic pride and patriotism in a student’s life from an early age.  
 
“In accordance with Sub-Section 31.3 of the 2013 Fiji Constitution, where reference is made to conversational and contemporary iTaukei and Fiji Hindi languages, I am also impressing on schools to teach students conversational Vosa Vakaviti and Fiji Hindi.  This will further strengthen multiculturalism and respect for diversity” said Minister for Education Premila Kumar.
 
Students are encouraged to remember that it is through education that one realises his/her full potential and gains individual independence.
 
Teachers’ key role is to develop students so that they appreciate and respect our rich diversity and culture. “Students must develop a strong sense of national pride, self-confidence, cooperation and peaceful co-existence. With these qualities embedded in our students, they will certainly contribute effectively to nation building. Our teachers must instill in our students values, a sense of patriotism, respect for all and education that contributes positively to our country” said Minister Kumar.
 
The Minister added that Government has done a lot for education. It has introduced several initiatives since 2014, which has reduced the financial burden of education on parents and guardians. These initiatives include Free Textbooks, Free Transport Assistance, Free Education Grant, TELS and Toppers Schemes.
 
“There is no doubt, that like the rest of the world, we are enduring a very challenging COVID-19 pandemic but our unity as a Nation of one people has made us more resilient than ever before’ said the Minister.
